So Close

So Close is one of Zach’s most prized works, having been exhibited three times since its creation in 2024. At its center, a mirror with a glitch reflects a deeper question of self-identity. The painting can be displayed in either orientation—one side featuring a light background, the other a dark one.

Within the mirror, two golden outlines of human figures appear to be breaking through the glass, reaching for the other side. On both sides of the mirror, candles burn, their smoke rising from bases marked with yin and yang symbols. With flames consuming the mirror and its reflection fractured by glitches, the painting captures the emotional turmoil that comes with self-discovery.

For Zach, this turmoil represents the feeling of being so close to something, yet simultaneously so far. Through an endless search for balance, So Close illustrates the universal struggle of confronting our emotions in the pursuit of our best selves. The piece tells a story of past and future identities, depicting the act of breaking through into the next phase of life.
